Biography

Dr. MacAdam has expertise in the physiology and management of forage plant species. Her research goal is to improve the production of ruminants on irrigated pastures in the Mountain West.

Teaching Interests

Dr. MacAdam teaches Structure & Function of Plants, a junior-level introduction to plant anatomy and plant physiology in the Department of Plants, Soils and Climate. She is the author of a Wiley lifesciences bestselling text also titled Structure & Function of Plants. In Fall 2016, Dr. MacAdam began teaching the Forage Production and Pasture Management course, focusing on practical applications for commercial hay, beef and dairy production. Dr. MacAdam is the author of chapters, on Plant Physiology and Irrigation & Water Management, in the current edition of the two-volume Forages text.

Research Interests

Birdsfoot trefoil is a valuable forage legume because it has very high nutritive value for ruminants, it can be grazed without risk of bloat, and contains a low concentration of condensed tannins that enhance ruminant production. Dr. MacAdam has determined that birdsfoot trefoil is uniquely productive and persistent when cultivated under irrigation in the alkaline soils and dry atmosphere of the Mountain West. Her current research builds on the high average daily beef gains and high dairy production of ruminants grazing birdsfoot trefoil, other legumes, and high-quality grass pastures to document the economic value, nutritive value, reduced environmental impact and consumer acceptance of meat and milk produced on birdsfoot trefoil and other legume pastures. She is a co-PI of USDA NIFA AFRI-funded grants on birdsfoot trefoil plant breeding, birdsfoot trefoil winter feeding, and carbon sequestration under birdsfoot trefoil vs. grass pastures.
