PSC 3500 - The Structure and Function of Economic Crop Plants
PSC 3500, The Structure and Function of Plants, integrates plant physiology and plant anatomy in one lecture and a related lab each week. For example, transpiration is driven by the difference in water potential between saturated air spaces inside leaves and the surrounding dry air. How can plants exert control over the loss of water from their leaves into the atmosphere? Pine needles use deeply recessed stomata and densely packed epidermal and mesophyll cells to minimize internal air spaces and protect the leaf (needle) from passive water loss through the epidermis. Vascular tissues are protected inside an endodermis, incorporating a feature of roots to maximize the protection of vascular tissue, which acts as the leaf’s plumbing system.
